McDowell Family

Saint Andrew's Society of Philadelphia

Records, 1749-1979.  22.5 ft.

Named in honor of Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, the Saint Andrew's Society of Philadelphia was organized in 1747 to assist indigent Scots throughout the city.   As such, the Committee of Assistants of the St. Andrew's Society aided the Scottish population of Philadelphia for over two hundred years, particularly during the Great Depression of the 1930s.  In 1958, the Foundation of the St. Andrew's Society was created to award scholarships for American university students to study in Scotland and for Scottish students to study in the United States.  The group has maintained a library throughout its existence, publishing four volumes on its history and members.  This collection includes twelve bound journals containing the Society's minutes from 1864-1969 and two additional supplementary volumes that attempt to account for lost minutes dating between 1749 and 1864.  Other holdings include Society membership lists, certificates, Annual Dinner records, financial records, Assistants Committee records, Library and Historical Committee records, newspapers, and other printed material.   Deposited by the Organization.

Scots Thistle Society

Records, 1806-1895.  3 ft.  The Scots Thistle Society was founded as a benevolent society in 1796.  The organization disbanded in 1976.  The records include minutes, financial records, and orders for gravesites at a Philadelphia cemetery.  In English.  Register available Gift of the organization.

Scottish Historical and Research Society of the Delaware Valley

Records, 1968-1992.  1.75 ft.  The Scottish Historical and Research Society was founded in 1964 to promote Scottish culture.  The society sponsors social and cultural events and supports an educational and genealogical group.  The collection contains financial records, correspondence, membership lists, minutes, constitution and bylaws, and newsletters.  In English.  Inventory available Gift of the organization.
