Papers,1910-1975.  .5 ft.  Pietro and Antonio Allegrini emigrated to the United States from San Quirico, Tuscany, Italy in 1910.  They settled in Pennsylvania and by 1919 had established the Pennsylvania Statuary Company in Philadelphia, which specialized in the manufacture of religious statues.  Family members carried on the business until 1977.  The collection consists primarily of printed and photocopied material about Pietro Allegrini, the statuary company, and Angelo Allegrini, one of Pietro's sons.  It includes Pietro's passport, marriage and naturalization certificates, and papers relating to the early history of the firm.  Material concerning Angelo consists primarily of printed and photocopied articles.  In English.  Register available.  Gift of Natalie Allegrini Carolfi.

Papers, 1940-1982.  1 ft.  Severo Antonelli was born in Fara Filiorum Petri, Chieti, Italy, and came to the United States with his family early in the twentieth century, settling in Philadelphia.  He opened his own photography studio in 1925.  He founded a school of photography in 1938, which is still operating.  He has been active in Italian-American organizations such as the Order Sons of Italy in America and the America-Italy Society of Philadelphia.  The collection includes pamphlets, ephemera, and uncataloged photographs.  In English.  Inventory available.  Gift of Severo Antonelli.

Papers, 1930-1936.  .5 ft. F rancesco R. Bilotta was born in Maida, Province de Catanzaro, Italy and emigrated to the United States ca. 1888.  He settled in Philadelphia and worked as a carpenter, contractor, realtor, and insurance agent.  He also wrote poetry.  The collection includes poems by Bilotta and three scrapbooks.  In Italian and English.  Inventory available.  Gift of Frank R. Papers, 1907-1974.  54 ft.  Covello was born in Avigliano, Basilicata, Italy, and immigrated to East Harlem, New York City, with his family in 1896.  He was a teacher and administrator in the New York City public school system, author of The Social Background of the Italo-American School Child and other studies, and a leader in the intercultural education movement and in the Italian-American community.  The papers document Covello's career as a teacher at DeWitt Clinton High School, principal of Benjamin Franklin High School, East Harlem, and educational consultant to the Migration Division of the Puerto Rican Department of Labor, as well as his research on Italian-American immigrants and Puerto Ricans, especially in East Harlem, and his activities in the Italian-American community.  The collection includes correspondence, his files as an educator, extensive research and writing files, records from organizations, and printed materials.  In English.  Register available.  Gift of Francesco Cordasco.

Papers, 1938-1954.  1.5 ft.  Frank Di Prima was born in Sicily in 1897 and came to the United States when he was seven years old. H  He became a musician, playing the guitar, banjo, violin, and mandolin.  In addition to performing in schools as a WPA musician, Di Prima played with well-known performers including Ray Miller, Paul Whiteman, and Al Jolson.  After his marriage to Amelia Marta, a second-generation Italian, the family settled in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.  The collection contains sheet music, some compositions by Di Prima, materials on music theory, and uncataloged photographs.  In English.  Inventory available.  Gift of Carmel Di Prima.

Papers, 1920-1985.  15 ft.  Elba Farabegoli Gurzau was born in New York City, the only child of Italian immigrants.  Educated in Italy and in New York City, she has pursued simultaneous careers as a social service worker with immigrants in New York and after 1942 in Philadelphia, and a folk dance promoter.  The papers include personal papers and diaries; correspondence, organizational records and ephemera from folk dance and folk arts groups; professional files from her work with the New York YWCA's Italian Mothers' Club program in the 1930s, the Philadelphia International Institute (later the Nationalities Service Center), 1942-1981, and the Philadelphia Committee for Italian Relief in the late 1940s; and drafts and research files for her book Folk Dances, Costumes, and Customs of Italy.  Folk arts groups represented include Folk Festival Council of New York, Coro D'Italia and Esperia Dancers, all of New York City, and I Vivaci, Folk Dance Leaders Council, Folk Dance Demonstration Group, and I Ballerini, all of Philadelphia.  The papers also include extensive records of the Italian Folk Arts Federation of America, which Gurzau helped to found in the 1970s.  For related materials see records of Italian Folk Arts Federation of America.  In English and Italian.  Register available.  Gift of Elba F. Papers, 1907-1978.  6 ft., 1,621 drawings.  Vincent Russoniello was born in St. Andrea de Conza, Avellino, Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1905.  His family settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he worked in a stone quarry and trained to be an architect.  Russoniello established his own firm in 1921 and practiced architecture in Scranton for over sixty years.  His largest commissions were for more than twenty churches.  Most of the churches were Roman Catholic nationality parishes or other immigrant congregations.  The collection includes assignments from correspondence school courses, drawings, specifications, correspondence, brochures, and records from Russoniello's architectural firm.  The bulk of the collection is architectural drawings.  In English.  Register available.  Gift of Louis Russoniello.

Records, 1921-1930.  1 volume.  The Victor Alfieri Society, named after the 18th century Italian tragic poet, was founded in 1908 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and chartered in 1911 by young male Italian immigrants for social and cultural purposes.  The society held dances and debates, performed plays, and collected moneys for charities.  Its name changed several times, reflecting the current interests of the club.  The volume contains minutes.  This item is also on microfilm.  In Italian.  Register available.  Gift of the organization.
